The launch of the Translational Perioperative and Pain Medicine
نویسنده
چکیده
William T.G. Morton, on October 16, 1846, demonstrated the use of ether anesthesia at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He opened a gateway to the translational medicine in modern anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. However, it took over 100 years before this compound was utilized for anesthetic purposes and eventually, the role of ether in modern medicine was replaced with safer drugs such as sevoflurane, desflurane, etc. Despite these drugs are essential for modern anesthesia, the underlying mechanism of general anesthetics remain elusive(1) and true neurological outcomes are currently a hot topic of debate/research in aged brain and neonatal brain.(2,3) Further studies are warranted and novel anesthetics with minimal side effects are to be discovered and developed.

Perspectives of Translational Medicine
Recently, we had a well-moderated, multidisciplinary discussion on perspectives of translational medicine including experts from both the United States and China through the WeChat group for Translational Perioperative and Pain Medicine (TPPM) hosted by Dr Renyu Liu, the interim Editor-in-Chief of TPPM. This proved to be an effective approach in promoting international academic exchanges and di...
متن کاملA translational consideration of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 biology in the perioperative setting.
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a critical adhesion molecule involved in leukocyte recruitment. Since its discovery in 1986, a large number of studies have been performed to elucidate its role in vitro and in vivo. Here, we review its role in leukocyte recruitment and consider future steps to take that will enhance our understanding of ICAM-1 biology and its translational applicat...
متن کاملDexmedetomidine-induced neuroprotection: is it translational?
Dexmedetomidine is often used in anesthesia and critical care medicine practice to sedate patients. Its neuroprotective effects have been shown in various ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injury models of animals. Randomized clinical trials have indicated that dexmedetomidine can improve outcome of patients under intensive care. Clinical trials are needed to determine whether dexmedetomidine can ...

Opioid receptors and their ligands produce powerful analgesia that is effective in perioperative period and chronic pain managements accompanied with various side effects including respiratory depression, constipation and addiction etc. Opioids can also interfere with the immune system, not only participating in the function of the immune cells, but also modulating innate and acquired immune re...
